In Dying to Know You, award-winning author Aidan Chambers has created an indelible portrait of a young man discovering his own voice in the world, and has constructed a love story that is as much about the mind as it is the heart.

In this contemporary love story, a teenage boy named Karl enlists a famous writer to help him impress his girlfriend, Fiorella. She has asked him to write her a letter in which he reveals his true self. But Karl isn't convinced he's good enough with words, so he tracks down Fiorella's favorite author and begs him to take up the task. The writer reluctantly assents, on the condition that Karl agree to a series of interviews, so that the letter will be based on an authentic portrait of Karl. The letter, though effective, has unexpected consequences for Karl, Fiorella, and the writer.

font-family: Arial;">I dove into this novel expecting to love it. Before I was half-way through it, I was still waiting. The problem was that it was too redundant. Not only was it redundant between stories, i.e., reference to Cyrano de Bergerac, but within the story, as well.

The main characters are a 75 year old man who is a published author; an 18 year old boy/man with dyslexia trained to be a plumber, Karl Williamson; Karl’s 16 year old girlfriend, Fiorella Seabourne; and Karl’s mother, Mrs. Williamson. Karl, because he’s dyslexic and doesn’t want his budding author girlfriend to know, asks the old author to help him write letters to his girlfriend. The author accepts because he sees so much of himself in Karl, hence the overly coincidental and redundant characterizations and plot: both Karl and the man are dyslexic, have the death of a close person affecting them, experience depression, contemplate suicide, struggle with their ‘art,’ like to cook, and deal with physical set backs.

The old author’s physical complaints, while expected from a 75 year old man, also became redundant. He was forever becoming cold and damp (the setting is in England), which sets off his sciatica, exacerbates his prostate condition (producing multiple urinating-in-the-bushes scenes), and causes him to get the ‘flu.

Converting Karl’s thoughts and conversations into the old author’s words establishes a redundancy in style, as well. Recurrently, the reader encounters Karl’s version of his words to Fiorella, and then the reader must re-experience them in the old author’s version of Karl’s words. Instead of producing an interesting, engaging juxtaposition, this reader felt as though I received multiple lessons in “full-dress English.

Chambers, metaphorically in the guise of the old author narrator, clearly explains his philosophies of life throughout the story, imparting the wisdom of his age to Karl and to the readers. However, his orations feel more like moralizing than like friendly advice from a senior citizen to a teenager, inveigling his audience to see the truth in his perspective. At other times, Chambers loses his clarity, and the old man describes Karl with so many different attributes, it’s no wonder Karl has trouble figuring out who or what he is.

The narrator, who is the old author, also repeats several times through the novel that he will tell the reader later what he is thinking or that he has an “inkling” of what will happen. I feel that is patronizing to a YA reader to be repeatedly hinted at to try to figure out some important piece of the plot now.

To his credit, Chambers created a title that is inspired on multiple levels. The reader is drawn into thinking that the title, Dying to Know You, is about the old author dying. At one point, the reader is moved to believe that Karl may die. On top of that, Karl and the old author both talk about their dead love ones. The reader can interpret the “You” in the title as either Karl, the old man, or one of their dearly departed. The “Dying” can be a literal death or the figurative death of a relationship.

The story touches on some key topics that appeal to YA readers, such as bullying, grief, depression, and falling in love. The motifs of art, fishing, cooking, and words offer the reader creative opportunities to contemplate life’s metaphors. For readers who benefit from ‘learning by repetition,’ Dying to Know You might be a welcome addition to their book shelves.

(582 words)

Rose-colored Glasses

These are copier paper-sized boxes, too. Since they ship them in Dewey Decimal order, they do not stack books or place books at right angles to each other to fit more books in a box. Then they stuff the rest of the space in the box with all of this, what I presume to be, recycled paper.

I've just realized that my boss is a cat lady (although I don't think he'd be happy to hear so.) He is the cat lady, and the teachers are the cats. He keeps his 50 +/- cats under his tight care because, of course, no one could take better care of them than he.
It doesn't matter that the cats are climbing all over each other to get what few resources are available, or that there are hurt and festering and starving cats all over the place. He refuses help from the outside because, of course, no one can take better care of the cats than he. Even if he is aware that there are cats in need, which I am not sure that he realizes, he thinks no one can provide the love and care that he does. So he keeps his cats hidden from others to prevent anyone from finding out his flawed caretaking, especially since he thinks others' caretaking abilities would inevitably be more flawed and damaging to the cats than his are.
As time goes on, the cats just get weaker or die off, while a few of the lucky ones manage to escape and run away. The cat lady just brings in more cats to replace former cats.
"School Library Advocacy for Administrators" is a five-week, online training program for school administrators aimed at increasing background knowledge and understandings of the role a quality school library media program plays in the academic success of students. Taught by Debra E. Kachel, Adjunct Instructor, from Mansfield University in
Mansfield, Pennsylvania, it was initiated with federal grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

NOVICE TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER LIBRARIAN
By Katherine Miller (2003)

"Despite these encouraging programs, [ones in which information on the role of the teacher-librarian be included in the training of pre-service teachers], it is apparent that most teacher-training institutions are not preparing new teachers to work collaboratively with the teacher-librarian. It may be that school-based teacher-librarians, workers in the field, as it were, will have to take the initiative and approach their closest Faculty of Education. We will need to initiate some liaison between teacher-librarians and the Department of Education at our local community college. We need to build a power base from which to influence the training of teachers and administrators—and of future school librarians (Hartzell, 1997).

"Rather than waiting passively, in the bottom half of a top-down model, for the arrival of new teachers fully cognizant of the role of the teacher-librarian, we need to be part of a continual loop; a reciprocal give and take of information and support between the Faculty of Education which is training the new teachers and the school system which is receiving them."

Rose-colored Glasses

What about Principals?

The Principal's Perceptions of School Libraries and Teacher-Librarians
Gary Hartzell, University of Nebraska at Omaha, USAAbstract

There's no question that principal support is vital to the establishment and maintenance of a quality library media program. The problem is that support flows from trust, and trust flows from understanding. Many principals do not understand what teacher-librarians really do nor do they appreciate the potential the library media program has for contributing to student and faculty achievement. This article explores why this is so. Principals’ perceptions of school libraries and teacher-librarians have been shaped by four interactive forces. The first is their own experiences in school libraries as children, in which they perceived the library as peripheral to the classroom. The second is the effect of their professional training, in which the library's role in curriculum and instruction was conspicuously absent. The third is the nature of the teacher-librarian's work, which is to enable and empower others. The fourth is the low profile teacher-librarians and school libraries have in the professional literature read by teachers and administrators, which prevents them from updating their sense of what the library really is and can do. The cumulative result is that administrators have only a limited and inaccurate understanding of libraries and teacher-librarians. The only way to change principal perceptions is to assault them directly, repeatedly, and from a multiplicity of directions. Reshaping perceptions takes time and effort and commitment. In the meantime, these erroneous perceptions will continue to guide most principals' relationships with school library media specialists.

Especially because of the third factor, teacher-librarians can be perceived as personally pushy and demanding, rather than as intelligence, educated professionals concerned for the education of their students. Your Facebook, MySpace and Friendster accounts will self-destruct by the end of the next Congressional vote. The U.S. House of Representatives has already approved the DOPA bill banning social networking sites. Now the bill goes to the Senate and eventually President Bush. Stop them. The HR5319 bill would even ban websites that are used for positive, professional and social experiences. SAVE YOUR SPACE. Go to http://www.saveyourspace.org and take action now.

And remember, Congress does NOT want you to forward this message, put it on your profile, or use it as an away message.

Rose-colored Glasses

I Can Dream...

I saw this description of a clinical practice (practicum? internship? student-teacher placement?) at The Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Web page entitled Cooperating Teacher-Librarian Roles and Responsibilities in Clinical Practice.

Ok ... wouldn't it be cool if all student teachers got a chance to do even a small part of this as their pre-teacher preparation?! Scroll down to the heading: Suggested Activities/Projects: Curriculum and Instruction. Some of these things teachers should/could already be doing, so why not let them experience it from both the teacher and the teacher-librarian's perspectives? For example,

Develop a bibliography and/or pathfinder for a class unit of study

Plan/implement library instructional experiences: book talks, information literacy skills, literature enrichment

Respond to reference requests by students and teachers

Develop a modified lesson plan for a special needs student based on a consultation with a special ed/resource teacher

Even in the heading under Collection Development, what beginning teacher wouldn't benefit from the following exercise? "Select one state standard in one content area, evaluate materials currently available in the collection to support that area, and make recommendations for new purchases." Or under Technology and Production, "Shadow district Director of Technology for one day."

I know I'm "preaching to the choir" when I'd really prefer to be "preaching to the converted," but see if you can follow this train of thought:

IF Information Power and Library Power stress cooperative planning and instruction,
AND by definition, cooperation takes two or more people,
THEN instruct all of the cooperating parties how to optimize their collaborative efforts!

(Hey! Principal & supervisory certificates could be made contingent on teacher-librarian orientation activities, too!)

Teachers and Librarians: Collaborative Relationships.

ERIC Digest.,
By: Russell, Shayne,

ERICRIE0, 20000801Database: ERIC

Now, since ERIC Digests are in the public domain and may be freely reproduced and disseminated, I'll put some key points here:

"Assignments developed in partnership between teachers and library media specialists are known to be more 'authentic'-exhibiting a higher degree of meaning and significance" (Gross & Kientz, 1999).

"...test scores increase as school librarians spend more time collaborating with and providing training to teachers, providing input into curricula, and managing information technology for the school" (Manzo, 2000).

Administrative Factors: "The greatest amount of collaboration occurs when the media specialist has a flexible schedule and team planning is encouraged by the principal" (Tallman & van Deusen, 1994).

Interpersonal Factors: "It is up to the library media specialist to take steps to change this by serving on curriculum committees, attending planning meetings, and sharing ideas for integrating the media center into the curriculum" (Bishop & Larimer, 1999).

Wouldn't it be sweet if we could do something about changing the statement in #4 by including teacher/librarian collaboration in teacher training as well as school librarian training?

Rose-colored Glasses
